Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is a fun, “feel-good” class with lots of health benefits. It combines laughing exercises, deep breathing and playful group activities. These activities bring more oxygen to the body and the brain which reduces stress and makes one feel more energetic and healthy.

Laughter yoga has been shown to boost the immune system, promote relaxation, lift mild depression, improve social interaction and connections, exercise the abdomen, help to control blood pressure increase lung capacity, detox the body, and improve circulation and digestion. But most importantly it’s fun and feels good!

Laughter Yoga classes are one hour long for active seniors, and 45 minutes for those with more limited abilities. Laughter Yoga does not require any special skills, equipment or clothing; and can be done either seated or standing. * This is a participatory class and would not be suitable for people who cannot move their limbs, or those with moderate to severe dementia.

Writing

August 23, 2014 By webmaster

The world around us is filled with interesting people, places and things.  Likewise, each of us has interesting experiences and knowledge that is helpful to others when shared. Writing allows us to capture this information and share it with others in informative, inspiring ways.

  • Poetry Writing Made Easy – Small groups will work together to create a beautiful poem of their own. Choose from either Haiku, Cinquain, Diamante or “I Am” poetry styles. We make it easy, no poetry writing experience is necessary! (1 hour class. Staff assistance is needed for groups larger than 4 people.)
  • Journalistic Writing – We teach your group how to decide on subjects of interest, identify information sources, compile interview questions, conduct an interview and take notes, verify their information, and write a journalistic article.  They will learn about research articles and interview articles, how to write and edit, and proper grammar and structure. They can then submit their articles to newspapers and magazines for publication.  (1 hour class)
  • Cooperative Writing – Your group will work together to create a writing piece that expresses their opinion about a certain subject. Subjects can include things like “How to Raise a Good Child”, “What I Learned From My Mother”, or “Secrets to a Happy Life.” Each participant will be interviewed and recorded, and the interviews will then be typed. (Time and cost varies, please contact us for options)
  • Creative Visualization: “If I Were President” – A discussion group concerning various social, economic and political issues; and how we would handle these issues if we were in charge. (1 hour class)
  • Storymaking – Using interesting photographs as inspiration, we will write creative stories that draw on our present-moment imagination, as well as any life experiences that we would like to add. A fun and unusual group activity. (1 hour class)

Reiki Therapy

August 17, 2014 By webmaster

Reiki Therapy

Reiki is an ancient technique for relaxation and stress reduction, which also promotes physical, mental and emotional healing. It is a recognized form of natural health care that uses a healing energy flow to restore and maintain balance. Reiki helps to ease symptoms of illness and injury, increase energy, and provide clearer thought.  People of all ages benefit from Reiki, as do animals and plants.

Reiki is gentle and non-invasive. No muscle or skin manipulation is involved, so it can be tolerated by people with pain or skin sensitivities, and those who are unable to tolerate massage. Reiki is being used by many area hospitals to reduce patient stress prior to surgery, and to shorten recovery time afterward. It is also used in hospice care to comfort those with terminal illness.

  • Intro to Reiki – An informational one-hour class designed to teach your group about what Reiki is and how it can help them.  Employees are also invited to attend.  This is a good “first step” for those who are not yet familiar with Reiki, and they can then decide if they would like to receive a Reiki Treatment or Reiki Attunement (see below). (1 hour class)
  • Reiki Treatment – Our Reiki therapist can provide one-hour private massage sessions for individuals, or shorter sample sessions for groups. We provide a comfortable and sanitary padded massage table, or the session can also be conducted on a chair, bed or sofa. Our therapists are certified, and have extensive experience working with senior adults and people with disabilities. (1 hour session, or longer if needed)
  • Reiki Attunement – We will teach the group about Reiki, and the hand positions they can use to give themselves a Reiki treatment whenever needed. We will then “attune” them to the Reiki energy, which will enable them to perform Reiki self-treatments as a complement to their current medical care. This is a two-hour group session, with a maximum of five people per session. (Note: This is an attunement for self-care, not for treating others.  Additional training is needed for treating others.)

Yoga & Posture

Yoga & Posture

Yoga and Posture

Keeping our bodies active is equally as important as keeping our minds active. Yoga helps us maintain strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. It keeps our muscles toned and our breathing strong. It increases our energy and our mental clarity, and improves our posture. And it helps us gain strength and balance for everyday activities such as reaching, lifting, walking, and climbing stairs. The meditative aspect of yoga also helps us reduce the stress in our everyday lives.

Yoga can also be easily adapted to all levels of physical and cognitive ability. Our instructors have specialized yoga training for senior adults and people with disabilities. Our programs are designed to use safe, gentle, uncomplicated movements, so no previous experience is necessary. We also teach seated classes so people who use walkers or wheelchairs can participate.

We ask that yoga mats and chairs be provided by your organization. Armless chairs work best. Contact us for information on where to buy inexpensive mats (mats are not needed for seated classes).

  • Gentle Yoga – Yoga helps with strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, concentration and brain health. Classes can be done standing, seated or a combination of both. All classes are customized for varying levels of physical and cognitive ability. Anyone can participate, even if they have never done yoga before, and even if they are using a walker or wheelchair. (1 hour class)
  • Posture Made Perfect – We all know that we are supposed to have good posture, but we don’t always know exactly how to achieve it. And a lifetime of less-than-perfect posture can be a hard habit to break. This interactive slideshow teaches proper posture for standing, sitting, walking and sleeping. Getting familiar with how it feels will help you be able to do it on your own. We can also teach you the correct posture for using a walker or wheelchair. (1 hour class) Please provide a computer, tv or projector for the slideshow
  • Yoga for Golf – Learn how yoga can improve your overall health as well as your golf game. You will learn yoga poses for strength, flexibility, balance and stamina that will help with your golf posture, swing and concentration. Even if you have never done yoga before, and even if you’re not strong or flexible, you can do this class! We will provide a good workout without making it complicated or intimidating. (1 hour class)
