Architecture

August 22, 2014 By webmaster

architecture

We can turn off the radio, we can walk past a museum, and we can choose not to write poetry.  But we cannot avoid Architecture.  Buildings form the backdrop for almost all of our activities: we live in them, work in them, shop in them, and learn in them.  Architecture is part of the essential “food, clothing, and shelter” triad.  Our experience of the built environment begins when we are young, with memories of our childhood home.  It continues through all phases of our lives and becomes an important part of our life experience.

  • NEW !!! An Architect’s Life – Learn what is involved in becoming an architect, what an architect does every day in their job, and all of the things an architect has to know about in order to create beautiful, comfortable and safe buildings. We will also have fun with a hands-on building project. (1 hour class plus materials)
  • NEW !!! The Architectural History of Cleveland Part II (1931-Present) – Continue the fascinating journey through Cleveland history as seen through the eyes of architects and designers. Learn how the Great Depression and the rise of Modernism changed the face of our skyline. Students will learn not only about the buildings themselves, but also the stories behind them, and the architects who designed them. (1 hour class) This can also make a fun and interesting guided bus tour!  Please contact us to discuss this option.
  • The Architectural History of Cleveland Part 1 (1835-1931) – Step back through time from an architectural perspective and learn about the buildings that have helped to shape Cleveland’s skyline as well as its rich history. Students will learn not only about the buildings themselves, but also the stories behind them, and the architects who designed them.  (1 hour class)  This can also make a fun and interesting guided bus tour!  Please contact us to discuss this option.
Building Styles of Cleveland Class – Learn how to recognize the characteristics of the prominent residential and commercial building styles in Cleveland.  Students will learn about the materials and features that make each style unique, and how to identify each style as they drive around the area.  (1 hour class)
  • Home Analysis Class – This class looks at ways people can adapt their homes to accommodate physical and mental health challenges due to age, illness, or injury.  We will discuss specialty products and construction projects that help people live safely and comfortably in their homes.  This can include things like making the bathtub easier to get into, installing door hardware that is easier to grasp, and special accommodations for those who are using a walker or wheelchair. We will study simple, inexpensive product options for earlier stages of adaptability; all the way up to more complex projects for later stages.  We will explain how to make informed, cost-sensible decision as needs progress.  This class is helpful for those who wish to stay living in their own homes (“Aging-In-Place”), as well as families who have someone with physical challenges living with them. (1 hour class)

  • Hand Drafting Class – For anyone who has ever wondered what it’s like to be an architect, this class will teach the principles of hand drafting and how to use drafting equipment.  We will guide the students through practice exercises and then help them create a drafting project of their choice – perhaps house blueprints or drawings for a craft project.  (6 weeks, 2 hours per week – 12 hours total)
  • Life History Museum – If your building has an extra room or an extra corner in the lobby, we can create a museum display where people contribute artifacts or heirlooms from their lives, or artwork they have created.  The stories behind the display items are written out, to explain their significance.  This can be either a permanent or temporary installation; and it can be a changing display, where the items on display are varied throughout the year.
  • Building Garden Structures – Beautiful wooden decks, gazebos, arbors, trellises, benches, and planters to help turn your community yard into an outdoor living room.  We can even coordinate with landscaping companies to provide beautiful trees, shrubs, and plants to integrate into the design.

Reiki

August 17, 2014 By webmaster

reiki  DIGITAL CAMERA
Reiki is an ancient technique for relaxation and stress reduction, which has also been shown to promote healing.  It is a recognized form of natural health care that uses a healing energy flow to restore and maintain physical, mental, and emotional balance. Reiki helps to ease symptoms of illness and injury, increase energy, and provide clearer thought.  People of all ages benefit from Reiki, as do animals and plants.

Reiki is gentle and non-invasive.  No muscle or skin manipulation is involved, so it can be tolerated by people with pain or skin sensitivities, and those who are unable to tolerate massage.  Reiki is being used by many area hospitals to reduce patient stress prior to surgery, and to shorten recovery time afterward.  It is also used in hospice care to comfort those with terminal illness.

  • New!!! Reiki for Animals – Learn how Reiki healing therapy can benefit animals as well as people. Learn about the “energy centers” that all animals have, and what can happen to the animal when these get out of balance. Learn exactly how a Reiki practitioner works with an animal, and hear some interesting stories about animal healing with Reiki.
  • Reiki Treatment – Therapy sessions and are conducted in your home, in a quiet room.  We provide a comfortable padded table and relaxing music.  If getting on the table is too difficult for you, sessions may be conducted on a bed or in a chair.  You will receive benefit from a single Reiki session. However ongoing health issues and recent injuries usually benefit most from more than one session.  You may choose either a 30-minute or 60-minute helping_a_doggy_friendsession.
  • Reiki Attunement – We will teach you about Reiki, and the hand positions you can use to give yourself a Reiki treatment whenever needed.  We will then “attune” you to the Reiki energy, which will enable you to perform Reiki self-treatments as a complement to your current medical care.  This is a two-hour session.  (Note: This is an attunement for self-care, not for treating others.  Additional training is needed for treating others.)
  • Animal Treatment – Reiki treatments can help your pet with with physical and emotional issues, as well as to facilitate stress relief.  Animals, fish, and birds can all benefit from Reiki.  The sessions are conducted in your home, where the animal feels most comfortable and safe.  Sessions last from 30-60 minutes, depending on your pet’s needs that day.  Your pet will receive benefit from a single Reiki session.  However ongoing health issues and recent injuries usually benefit most from more than one session.
  • Plant Treatment – Houseplants that are sick or stressed can also benefit from Reiki.  If you have a plant that needs help, let us know and we will be happy to treat them at no cost while we’re there!

  • The Benefits of Reiki Energy Healing – An informational one-hour class designed to teach your group about what Reiki is and how it can help them.  Employees are also invited to attend.  This is a good “first step” for those who are not yet familiar with Reiki, and they can then decide if they would like to receive a Reiki Treatment or Reiki Attunement (see below). (1 hour class)
  • Reiki Treatment – Our Reiki therapist can provide one-hour private massage sessions for individuals, or shorter sample sessions for groups. We provide a comfortable and sanitary padded massage table, or the session can also be conducted on a chair, bed or sofa. Our therapists are certified, and have extensive experience working with senior adults and people with disabilities. (1 hour session, or longer if needed)
  • Reiki Attunement – We will teach the group about Reiki, and the hand positions they can use to give themselves a Reiki treatment whenever needed. We will then “attune” them to the Reiki energy, which will enable them to perform Reiki self-treatments as a complement to their current medical care. This is a two-hour group session, with a maximum of five people per session. (Note: This is an attunement for self-care, not for treating others.  Additional training is needed for treating others.)

Yoga and Posture

August 17, 2014 By webmaster

warrior 2  yogaKeeping our bodies active is equally as important as keeping our minds active. Yoga helps us maintain flexibility, strength, balance and endurance.  It keeps our muscles toned and our breathing strong.   It increases our energy and our mental clarity, and improves our posture.  And it helps us gain strength and balance for everyday activities such as reaching, lifting, walking, and climbing stairs.  The meditative aspect of yoga also helps us reduce stress in our everyday lives.

And the good news is that yoga can be easily adapted to all levels of physical and cognitive ability! Our instructors have specialized yoga training for senior adults and those with physical and mental challenges. Our programs are designed to use safe, gentle, uncomplicated movements; so even if you’ve never done yoga before, now you can!  We can do all-seated classes, standing classes, or a combination; so even people who use walkers or wheelchairs can do yoga.

We ask that you provide your own mat, and chair if needed (armless works best).  Mats are available at local stores starting at $5 each (contact us for more information on where to buy mats).  Mats are not needed for all-seated classes.

  • NEW!  Yoga Stretching – A healthy and gentle wake-up for the body and mind.  You will learn stretches and simple yoga poses that you can do on your own to keep your muscles limber, your joints moving, and your mind clear.  You will also learn breathing techniques that can be used to energize yourself during that afternoon slump, or calm yourself when you are feeling down or agitated.  This class can be done all-seated, or partially standing. (One time, 45 minute class or ongoing 8-week session)
  • NEW!  Family Yoga – For families touched by developmental disabilities. A gentle, relaxing, un-complicated class for parents and children of all ages and all abilities. This class is a wonderful opportunity for strengthening physical, mental and emotional health while bonding together. Taught in your home – we just push the furniture out of the way.
  • NEW!  Yoga for Golf – Learn how yoga can improve your overall health as well as your golf game. You will learn yoga poses for strength, flexibility, balance and stamina that will help with your golf posture, swing and concentration. Even if you have never done yoga before, and even if you’re not strong or flexible, you can do this class! We will provide a good workout without making it complicated or intimidating.
  • Personal Yoga Classes – Our classes are customized to work at your level of ability, and we adapt the classes to whatever physical challenges you may have.  Classes are 45 minutes long.  We recommend a minimum 8-week session for you to become comfortable and familiar with the poses, and begin to see advancement.
  • Group Yoga and Yoga Stretching Classes – Invite your friends or family over for a fun combination of exercise and companionship.  Class size will depend on how much space you have.  The cost is split by the students.
